Funzing LDN Talks at Night - Drugs in Nazi Germany

Back Room

To mark the release of his new book 'Blitzed: Drugs in Nazi Germany' - Norman Ohler joins us for an exclusive LDN Talks @ Night event to discuss the drug use epidemic in the Third Reich.

The sensational account of the overwhelming role of drug-taking in the third reich - from Hitler and his entourage to ordinary troops and housewives.
Norman Ohler investigates the murky, chaotic world of drug use in the Third Reich. Ohler's book is the first to show how the entire Nazi regime was a perfomance society permeated with drugs - cocaine, heroin, morphine and methamphetamines, the last of these crucial to troops' resilience and partly explaining German victory in 1940.

Ohler is explicit that drugs cannot explain Third Reich ideology, but their promiscuous use impaired and confused decision-making, with drastic effects on Hitler and his entourage, who, as the war turned against Germany, took refuge in ever more poorly understood cocktails of stimulants. This chemical euphoria changes how we should think about the Nazi high command and its ability to understand the situation it found itself in by 1944-5.

Norman Ohler was born in Zweibrcken in 1970. He wrote the first ever hyper-text novel in the world. He is the author of three novels, Die Quotenmaschine (the world's first hypertext novel), Mitte and Stadt des Goldes as well as two novellas.
He was co-writer of the script for Wim Wenders' film Palermo Shooting. He researched Blitzed in numerous archives across Germany and the United States it is his first non-fiction book. Blitzed is being translated into over 20 languages.

Doors: 7pm / Talk starts: 7.30pm.

FUNZING LDN Talks at Night: Life of a UN War Crimes Investigator

Back Room

Jonathan Tait-Harris has been there and done that.. with humour and style, usually in a hostile land and under fire. Jonathan will illustrate and highlight the value of face-to-face communication in the 21st century, referring to his own personal experience - from being an army officer in armed conflicts and a detective for the British police to investigating war crimes, first for the UN in the Balkans and later as an adviser for the US and Iraqi governments.

Despite having been face to face both with Saddam Hussein and Chemical Ali, and having dug up a lot of mass graves in Kosovo, Jonathan amuses and moves audiences with the lessons he learned around the world from many dramatic and improbable, yet all too human encounters.

His knowledge of Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa is extensive and he is regularly called upon to advise and comment to the media, governments and NGOs. Jonathan also works with International Location Safety, which helps NGOs, journalists and professional travellers to stay alive by training them how to handle situations and threats in the world's most dangerous places.

Doors: 7pm / Talk starts: 7.30pm.

Though his earliest releases were based on house and disco edits, for the past few years Kid Who has been exploring the more dirty and rough side of dance music, both through the his own productions (check the cassette-smeared house of his Mirgage Sequence EP or the slo-mo techno grind of Gap Related Injury on Clan Destine Traxx VA 12 Dark Acid IV), as well as through the artists he brings to Bravura, with appearances from the likes of Jonathan Kusuma, Scott Fraser, Matt Weiner/TWINS and Jerry Riggs."

INCREMENTS
Growing up in the Caribbean, brothers Ross and Evan Lelliott better known as Increments began their music journey at regional Trinidadian carnival celebrations.
Kaleidoscopic explosions of rhythms mixed with vibrant sights mixed with a deep-rooted sense of community. These early years introduced them to the multi-sensory power of dance music when it fuses with community, and inspired them to learn their first instrument, the steelpan.
From these roots, the Lelliotts moved to London. Careers in the visual arts inspired the brothers to embark on their first Increments collaboration, Vitamins. A fivepart mix series, each instalment explores the way sound can influence the way you see things, and vice versa.
Whether DJing or playing live the duo always deliver emotive experiences beyond just sound their recorded material will be no different.

Funzing LDN Talks at Night: Is Tech The End of Getting Old?

Back Room

By 2040, could we have abolished what we now know as biological ageing?

Its a big if, but if we decide as a species to make this project a priority, theres around a 50% chance that practical rejuvenation therapies resulting in the comprehensive reversal of ageing will be widely available as early as 2040.

People everywhere, on the application of these treatments, will, if they wish, stop becoming biologically older. Instead, again if they wish, theyll start to become biologically younger, in both body and mind, as rejuvenation therapies take hold. In short, everyone will have the option to become ageless.

This possibility tends to provoke two powerful objections. First, people say that its not possible that such treatments are going to exist in any meaningful timescale any time soon. In other words, they insist that human rejuvenation cant be done. Its wishful thinking to suppose otherwise, they say. Its bad science. Its naively over-optimistic. Its ignorant of the long history of failures in this field. The technical challenges remain overwhelmingly difficult.

Secondly, people say that any such treatments would be socially destructive and morally indefensible. In other words, they insist that human rejuvenation shouldnt be done. Its essentially a selfish idea, they say an idea with all kinds of undesirable consequences for societal harmony or planetary well-being. Its an arrogant idea, from immature minds. Its an idea that deserves to be strangled.

Cant be done; shouldnt be done this talk will argue that both these objections are profoundly wrong. The speaker will argue instead that rejuvenation is a noble, highly desirable, eminently practical destiny for our species a Humanity+ destiny that could be achieved within just one human generation from now. The abolition of aging is set to take its place on the upward arc of human social progress, echoing developments such as the abolition of slavery, the abolition of racism, and the abolition of poverty.

In more detail, the talk will highlight issues and opportunities about:
Ongoing "business as usual" medical improvements
Various forthcoming engineering disruptions of the medical field
Various forthcoming social and political disruptions relevant to life extension.
The talk will also
Suggest actions that can be taken to increase the probability of the success of the rejuveneering project
Consider steps that we can all take to increase the chance of us living long enough to be able to reach the point of wide availability of these therapies.

Doors: 7pm / Talk starts: 7.30pm.

Funzing - History of Psychedelics

Back Room

The long trip: A brief history of psychedelics

The traditional use of psychoactive plants and fungi for spiritual and shamanic rituals has occurred for thousands of years, whereas the Western scientific research of these substances has only been explored in the last 100 years, and prohibition stalled the at least 50 years of this.

Prior to the reactionary media hysteria and the subsequent government backlash at the end of the 1960s hippie era, a wealth of serious scientific research was conducted into the therapeutic and medical benefits of powerful psychoactive drugs, not to mention inspiring the personal computing industry, odd theoretical corners of physics, spirituality, psychotherapy and extreme sports.

By the beginning of the 1970s, however, almost all therapeutic applications and scientific human research with such drugs had been curtailed and their use criminalized. In the following years, this potentially beneficial side to hallucinogens became largely forgotten. Only during the last decade, has this research gradually been resumed to the point where we might now even speak of a renaissance of research into psychedelic medicines. This talk explores the of legacy of psychedelics across all spheres of culture, academia and medicine, past, present and possible future.

Dr David Luke is Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Greenwich where he teaches an undergraduate course on the Psychology of Exceptional Human Experience. His research focuses on transpersonal experiences, anomalous phenomena and altered states of consciousness, especially via psychedelics, having published more than 100 academic papers in this area, including five books, most recently Neurotransmissions: Essays on Psychedelics (2015) and Talking with the Spirits: Ethnographies from Between the Worlds (2014). He has studied techniques of consciousness alteration from South America to India, from the perspective of scientists, shamans and Shivaites, but increasingly has more questions than answers.

Doors: 7pm / Talk starts: 7.30pm.
