Stephen Hawking: His Life, Work & Legacy

Back Room

How did Stephen Hawking discover the so called 'Theory of Everything'? In which ways did his life's work have such a profound affect on Modern Science? What made his findings so ground-breaking? Join award-winning author & science journalist Dr Stuart Clark for an extraordinary look into the life & work of the late great Professor himself.

Stephen Hawking is one of the most recognisable scientists of all time, one of the greatest cosmologists of the modern age, not to mention a cultural icon for disabled people. His passing left a legacy that will inspire generations to come.

His work took us closer to understanding the formation of the universe than anyones since Einstein. He also showed that black holes are not the cosmic destroyers everyone imagined but can bizarrely evaporate to nothing over the course of billions of years. And in the equation he developed to describe these ideas, he found the firsts hints of a deeper theory governing the universe the so-called theory of everything.

This talk will introduce Hawkings ideas, set them in their astronomical context and describe the agenda his legacy sets for modern science. It will discuss the way he balanced fame and science, and will show that his greatest genius was the simplicity of his conclusion that the universe is an elegant, understandable place.

Venue: Cafe 1001, Brick Lane
Doors: 7pm / Talk starts: 7.30pm.

Who Was Shakespeare: Man, Myth or Conspiracy?

Back Room

Who was the real William Shakespeare? What do we know about former Earl of Oxford Edward De Vere - and his relationship with The Bard? Could it really be that some of the world's most famous plays were written by someone else? Join Professor William Leahy for a compelling talk, where we uncover the facts surrounding the Shakespeare authorship question.

Shakespeare is regarded as the greatest writer who has ever existed, indeed as the greatest artist. His works are famed throughout the world and is on the syllabus of schools, colleges and universities globally.

However, many believe he did not in fact write the plays and that claims about his authorship are founded in a mixture of myth and wilful misinformation.

Our cultures seem to be fixated upon the idea of the single author/genius and thus, in Shakespeare's case we fall into a trap of finding the answer we desperately seek despite almost total lack of evidence.

In this talk I show how we have fallen into this trap, led by an academic community that continues to tell the same old story while knowing that much of it is untrue. In this talk I show that Shakespeare the author is a myth.

Venue: Cafe 1001, Brick Lane
Doors: 7pm / Talk starts: 7.30pm.

Forensic Talk: Extreme Accounts of Survivors

Back Room

A portion of ticket sales will be donated to victim support charities.

In this potentially life-saving talk, Jennifer will share the stories of survivors from extreme incidents, she will also discuss the accounts of security experts and crime prevention strategies.

You will hear stories from those who survived mass shootings and escaped serial killers and have decided to share their experience with the world. What do they think they did which meant they survived?

You will learn specific ways to protect yourself, including spotting danger signs early and how to safely deal with strangers trying to enter your house or how to identify the source of anonymous threats. This talk will be a celebration of human intuition, capability and resilience, designed to empower those for who fear of violent crime is a concern.

Jennifer Rees has been a Forensics Lecturer and Psychotherapist for a number of years in addition to graduating in Criminal Law at Birkbeck's Institute for Criminal Policy Research. She has trained Policing recruits on interviewing techniques, as well as dealing with suspects, witnesses and victims.

In 2016, she was one of 50 Healthcare Professionals selected by Google and Johnson & Johnson to write a Whitepaper recommendation for the NHS, and was appointed the Vice Chair of the Mental Wealth Initiative, a sub-committee of the Youth Health Parliament.

Saudi Arabia & the UK: Politics Before Principles?

Back Room

What lies behind the British governments decision to place politics before principles in the Gulf? Why have Anglo-Arabian relations grown even closer in recent years, despite ongoing, egregious human rights violations? Join author & middle-east analyst Dr David Wearing for this fascinating look into our complex relationship with the Gulf State, and the real life 'Bitter Lake'.

UK ties with Saudi Arabia and the other Gulf monarchies are under the spotlight as never before. The killing of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi, and the UKs key supporting role in the disastrous Saudi-led intervention in Yemen has lent added urgency to the debate.

David Wearing, author of 'AngloArabia: Why Gulf Wealth Matters to Britain', argues that Saudi Arabia and the other Gulf Arab monarchies constitute the UKs most important and lucrative alliances in the global south. They are central both to the British governments ambitions to retain its status in the world system, and to its post-Brexit economic strategy.

This talk will shine a light on the shocking lengths the British state has gone to in order to support these regimes. As the UKs ties with Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states continue to make the headlines, this talk lifts the lid on AngloArabia and whats at stake for both sides.

Venue: Cafe 1001, Brick Lane
Doors: 7pm / Talk starts: 7.30pm.

The Truth About Super Strength Mandy

Back Room

Why have Ecstasy deaths in the UK quintupled in the last seven years? What can be done about it?

Ecstasy is cheaper, stronger, more abundant and more dangerous than ever. Mike Power spent six months on an undercover investigation to find out why... Travelling to China last summer to carry out a sting on a chemicals plant, Power reveals his untold story of this operation.

Mike Power is a British freelance investigative journalist specialising in drugs and technology.

His book Drugs 2.0 was published in 2013, and documented a new digital frontline in the war on drugs. It was the first book to document how users and dealers have outmanoeuvred law enforcement and created a global, online black market in narcotics.

His reports around the emergence of so-called legal highs recreational drugs manufactured in Chinese laboratories that are legal in most countries have prompted complex policy debates in the UK and beyond.

His "Drugs Unlimited" report for Matter.com documented an undercover mission to produce and import a new, legal drug, using only a laptop, won the 2014 British Science Writers Association's prize for the best investigative journalism.

An advocate of urgent drug law reform, Power offers colorful reportage and research on this topic, whether infiltrating clandestine labs in Shanghai, jungle clearings in Phnom Penh or treks through Colombian coca fields.

Through talks with Dutch and English Ecstasy smugglers, British political experts and dark web cryptomarket drug dealers, Power argues the case for a wide-ranging and radical rethink of all drug laws in the digital age.

Mike Power has reported extensively from Panama and Colombia for Reuters, and his clients include The Guardian, Vice, Mixmag, Matter.com, Deutsche Welle, The Mail On Sunday, The Sunday Herald, Lonely Planet, Dazed & Confused, Granta, The London Evening Standard, Playboy and many more.
